Build Your Board

Build your board

Strong and effective governance is one of the cornerstones of outstanding leadership.

School governance has never been more important.

School governance has never been more important and the expectations of those who volunteer for office are high. Strong and effective governance is one of the cornerstones of outstanding leadership.

As an education consultant Charmaine carries out External Reviews of Governance for Leicestershire County Council and knows that for many schools the first sign of serious weakness in governance practice comes as negative feedback from an Ofsted visit. The most common weaknesses found by Ofsted are in Strategic Leadership and Accountability. Governors are expected to be partners in shaping the vision of the organisation and are accountable for holding the Senior leaders of the organisation to account for delivering a strategy driven by that vision.

Invest in your board now, before it becomes a cause for concern. Ensure that your board can bring capacity and energy to your vision of providing a world-class education for the young people and community you serve.

Charmaine can work with your governing body to strengthen leadership capacity and performance. A package specifically designed for you can be created using our online assessment tool based on the Competency Framework for Governance. Typically, this might look like one 3-hour twilight team building session, with additional coaching and training sessions as indicated by the initial enquiry and discovery stage. Sessions can also be arranged for on Saturdays.

It has been incredibly useful to work with Charmaine during a time when the team has really had to take a look at their individual roles and responsibilities. The sessions that have been delivered have allowed us to become stronger and have encouraged us to create and share our views on where to take the school next. We have been able to do this due to the sensitive and thought provoking activities and sessions that Charmaine has planned and delivered. I have felt that during out team sessions we have been able to talk candidly in a safe environment that Charmaine has been able to maintain throughout.

Jo Elderidge, Deputy Head, The Fernwood School, Nottingham.

“Charmaine has helped me to develop a better understanding of the steps needed to lead on a whole school initiative. The coaching experience had impact on my confidence and ability to lead on a whole school initiative. I think that it would be useful for all new SLT members to be given some developmental coaching such as this.” Leadership Development Coaching

“One of the best sessions we’ve had.  Charmaine Roche ran an excellent session and we all got something out of it. It was such an open, creative and thought-provoking 3 hours. A huge thank you to Charmaine and all the women who came and made it such an enjoyable experience.” Resilience Workshop

Sonia Long, Rose Associates, CEO, 2016

“The training went really well, I was so pleased that everyone engaged. I feel it has given me the strength to be able to calmly remind the team of what we discussed in the training and put it into practice.” Team Resilience Training

Office Manager, Ellis Guildford School, August 2017

“Working with Charmaine gave us renewed clarity. Having someone who is aware of our roles and responsibilities but does not have all the baggage enables a new set of eyes to observe things that may well be obscured from the team itself. The team coaching was a real insight and thought-provoking, thank you!” Leadership Team Coaching

Steve Lewis, Headteacher, Rushcliffe School Trent Academies Trust, Nottinghamshire, 2017

“I selected Charmaine to be my coach, as I liked the way she said things, and I thought she would challenge me, which was what I wanted.  She suggested a 360-degree feedback exercise, which she conducted and analysed brilliantly well. As a result, I feel that I am more proactive at work, and have learned some great strategies and techniques to help me be more productive which will pay dividends in years to come.” Life Transition and Leadership Development Coaching
